That’s a given.

But to be truly successful, you have to show what makes you different from all the other candidates – what marketing people call your “unique selling feature”. When a potential employer is faced with fifty or a hundred candidates, they are looking for something that makes one candidate – hopefully you! – stand out. The lessons and relationships you talk about are one route to your having that unique selling feature.

The problem is, you may never know which one will grab the attention of any one potential employer. While one will say “That’s not relevant to this role”, another will say “That’s interesting. That’s a perspective that we don’t currently have within the company/team, and one which we think could well be useful to us in future.” So when looking to move on, you have to get your CV – your selling pitch in other words – out before a lot of different people and organisations. One will be right for you.
